(Washington DC, 4 de enero de 2024 – EFE / MundoUR).- Estados Unidos inició este sábado la despedida al expresidente Jimmy Carter (1977-1981), fallecido el pasado 29 de diciembre a los 100 años de edad, con un recorrido de su féretro por su ciudad natal en el estado sureño de Georgia.
Los honores al exmandatario demócrata se prolongarán por seis días e incluirán una capilla ardiente en Atlanta -la capital de Georgia-, un evento privado con su círculo cercano en el Centro Carter y un funeral de estado en Washington D.C.

Custodiado por agentes del servicio secreto, y dentro de un vehículo negro, el féretro de Carter comenzó el sábado en la mañana su recorrido por las calles de Plains, la ciudad donde creció.
Decenas de personas, algunas de ellas llevando pequeñas banderas de EE.UU. en las manos, se congregaron en las aceras de la ciudad para rendir un tributo al exmandatario.
La caravana continuará el recorrido hacia Atlanta, con paradas en el Capitolio de Georgia y terminando en el Centro Carter, la iniciativa fundada por él y su esposa en 1982 para apoyar la resolución de conflictos y defender los derechos humanos alrededor del mundo.
Los restos de Carter yacerán en una capilla ardiente en el Centro Carter durante más de 60 horas, hasta la mañana del 7 de enero, cuando serán trasladados en avión a Washington.

A su llegada a la capital federal habrá una procesión fúnebre con carruaje hasta el Capitolio de Estados Unidos.
Su féretro será colocado en la Rotonda del Capitolio, donde se oficiará otro servicio y se instalará nuevamente su capilla ardiente.
La capilla ardiente permanecerá abierta desde la noche del 7 de enero a la mañana del 9, cuando será trasladado a la Catedral Nacional de Washington para el funeral de Estado.
El funeral en la Catedral, en la que el presidente, Joe Biden, leerá un panegírico, culminará con una semana de ceremonias.
Biden ha ordenado el cierre del Gobierno federal el día 9 de enero y ha declarado día nacional de luto. También cerrará la bolsa de Nueva York.

Después del oficio en la capital federal, su féretro será nuevamente trasladado en avión a Georgia, para recibir un servicio privado en la Iglesia Bautista Maranatha.
Más tarde será trasladado al lugar del entierro en la residencia Carter.
El exmandatario, ganador también del Premio Nobel de la Paz en 2002, murió en su hogar en Plains, Georgia, donde se encontraba recibiendo cuidados paliativos tras recibir tratamiento por una forma agresiva cáncer de piel tipo melanoma.
